Hyperhidrosis Treatment –Excessive Sweating treatment

Hyperhidrosis is caused by an over activity of the sweat glands in the hands feet and armpits. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature.

Hyperhidrosis treatment can be administered by our specialist Leona.

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis:

  • Focal hyperhidrosis is the more common type involving excessive sweating on the feet, hands and in about 30 – 40% of cases, the armpits. Botox is recommended for the treatment of focal hyperhidrosis affecting the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis) when other treatments have not worked.

  • Generalised hyperhidrosis affects the whole body. It is much less common and is usually caused by another illness such as an infection, diabetes or when the thyroid gland is overactive. The excessive sweating usually stops when the illness is treated.

  •

Many things can trigger normal sweating and this is also true for hyperhidrosis – it’s just the amount of sweating that varies.

  • Examples of triggers include:exercise

  • heat or cold

  • alcohol, coffee or tea, smoking, hot or spicy food

  • stress, anxiety or strong emotions

  • certain times of the day

  •

Where does the sweat go?

Your sweat doesn’t go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the areas treated with Botox. The rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment

When Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the area, it temporarily blocks the action of the nerve which supplies the sweat glands, preventing them from producing sweat. The treatment is quick and only mildly uncomfortable. This is a highly effective treatment which lasts between 4-6 months.
